Love it that David's book started with a spreadsheet of concepts. Then whittled down through process of elimination. Ended with specific questions he wanted to answer eg which fish are okay to eat.

Process starts with = stub (seed) - concept (something you can explain to others).
When starting to look at design, consider what needs to be in and out.
Look at interestingness, integrity, form and function.
Integrity = truth, consistency, honesty, accuracy
Function = easienss, usefulness, usbility, fit
Form = beauty, structure, appearance

Had to understand every aspect. Read pdf after pdf, spoke to tax department. put into spreadsheet. Loads of research. Put in spreadsheet and find shape, pattern, structure of it.
Always publishes spreadsheet of data behind graphics, publish on Google docs, so people can respond, check, feed back.

Generally don't move into design until I have a spreadsheet. If I can't express it in a spreadsheet it generally means something's wrong. Arrange it, shade it, becomes a skeleton I build on.
