Love it that David's book started with a spreadsheet of concepts. Then whittled down through process of elimination. Ended with specific questions he wanted to answer eg which fish are okay to eat.

Boredom, ignorance, bewilderment, frustration - these are your friends.

If this is how you feel about a story, what can you do to make it interesting, what can you add or subtract to enhance it?

How can I make this interesting?
How can I find this out?
How can I understand this?
How can I make this work better?

Process starts with = stub (seed) - concept (something you can explain to others).

When starting to look at design, consider what needs to be in and out.
Look at interestingness, integrity, form and function.

Integrity = truth, consistency, honesty, accuracy
Function = easienss, usefulness, usbility, fit
Form = beauty, structure, appearance
Interestingness = relevant, meaningul, new

Use of scale - Goggle Box. 200bn hours on TV versus 100m hours to build Wikipedia.
Tax Gap - Official 42bn pounds - details; things not included in gap (not avoidance)
Had to understand every aspect. Read pdf after pdf, spoke to tax department. put into spreadsheet. Loads of research. Put in spreadsheet and find shape, pattern, structure of it.

Always publishes spreadsheet of data behind graphics, publish on Google docs, so people can respond, check, feed back.

1. Research
2. Sketch idea - can see where data bunches up, where logjams are, how hard to see.
3. Digital sketch - later can be better, once you start doing digitally, get attached, harder to play, people expect to see it straightaway

Left vs right brain.

Sometimes work with other designers.

Left Vs Right. - took three drafts. worked with designer. rare to get that so quick.

Journalists generally have one axis - top to bottom. When write in a spreadsheet can structure things horizontally.
Generally don't move into design until I have a spreadsheet. If I can't express it in a spreadsheet it generally means something's wrong. Arrange it, shade it, becomes a skeleton I build on.

Design is about optimisation, (not simplification), reduce to essence, take out as much as you can without reducing information.

$50m: guardian.co.uk lotsof google searches, systematic. drew to scale, then coloured, then used grid to structure image.
Always use a grid of a visual image (can't see it but gives it structure)

Lots of time.

Do everything by hand. Draw in Illustrator. Can change design as I go. Connects me with data. Grids are good.

never trained in design, never been to art school, generate loads of images and improve incrementally until right.

pattern spotting, exquisitely sensitive to patterns. it's a language. combine language of the eye with the language of the mind.

Time Travel took 37 drafts and three designers. Some left.

Wide views eg coke heads, bnp versus white populations.

top 8 - screen out each one by one

if twitter were 100 people (crash zoom)

snake oil = that kind of mage called a balloon race. spent a month scraping thousands of studies and building this graphic (one of six months set aside to create book Information is Beautiful).

Try to use online sources so other people can check for themselves. Easier often to get on phone and ask the experts directly, but others can't check. Deliberate decision.

You tend to find out your own biases as you go. visualising information like this is quite powerful...and i feel a responsibility to get it as accurate as possible.'

internet police get onto me to straighten me out on errors.

cartograms - countries shaped according to underlying data. to me they're kind of ugly and not clear. not keen on spaghetti.
charticle = blend of chart and article.
newspaper infographics that fill every space.
some are pretty but so-what

'I could have guessed that'

incredibilograms - super complex, cool looking,
easy to go too busym too simple

what works?

Diagram has to be:

self-sufficient - title, sub-title, source, context. don't need any more information to understand it
optimized - nothing extraneous

list of types of charts in the book.

ffffound - design/images site

looks at design blogs

have an assistant designer now, sometimes use researchers

challenge for newsrooms - lucky i worked in advertising so have design and journalism in brain. usually have a words person and a graphic person. got to get synergy right. could be journalists do that too. journalist teams with designer - team needs to build over time. i work with programmers after I've done design, or to add interactivity.

Something that gives great satisfaction or enjoyment

Delightful experiences have lasting power.

deliver delight: capture attention, increase engagement, create desire for more

how to delight...

1.exceed expectations

don't pick an arbitrary line and try to exceed it. shift the line.

2. deliver value early (think of approach to hotel, help with bags, environment etc)

good design isn't about making decision for your suers it's about making those decisions irrelevant. - michael lopp @rands

4. embrace serendipity

3. sweat the small detilas

5. package it nicley

6. listen respond and act

Universal theory of stuff.
1. the message
2. the tone
3. the format

problem with the word content...
can have warm writing or cool writing. the word content is inherently cold. it captures what it is but it doesn't capture our relationship with it.

eg. Hmmm, The Catcher in the Rye '200 pages of content' - doesn't work.
eg. Casablanca, hmmm, that's two hours of great content.

But hard to find a better word. Any ideas?

Using cool words to denote things that are warm misses out so much.

How can we warm up 'content'?

Making stories, bonds us together.

Stories bond us but also teach us to empathise.

Wall-E is a jerk, made me cry, it's allaboutthestory, he's not alive, doesn't say anything,

'I've never had a bad conversation around a campfire'.

need to work on being able to have these kind of deep, meaningful conversations online.

People say online conversations will never replace those offline.

Technology is not either/or proposition. The operative word on the web is the word 'and'.

We can have both.

How can we tell stories online, how do we get people who use the web to tell stories. How do we get people to tell stories.

... answer us You just ask,

Good questions get good answers, bad questions get bad answers.

Every form is a question.

What's worst question you can ask someone if you want to get them to tell a story.

Worst form...

About Me:

Where do you start? How do you summarise your whole existence right there. And the cursor's just looking at you.

Please summarise your life on earth in 140 charactters or less. So you get father, husban, friend, designer, bartender and snowboarder. Bad question leads to a list...

I think we're more interesting than this.

wall-e robot+ story = person
take a person - story = robot.

Twitter has worst form (about me:) but also the best:

What's happening? _____

You capture someone's ID, here's what I'm thinking, doing right now. politics, dogs, sandwiches.

What happens if we change the question. What if we ask: what did you care about when you were nine. What's the last thing you changed your mind about.

Three ways to tell stories online.

1. Framework

every hashtag is a framework for improv.most are about stories.

when i was little haveuever, icantlivewithout confessiontime thingsimiss

2. Curation

good meaningful curation by one or two people can tel good stories.

3. Hijacking formats

Stories connect us.

google voice - voicemail - email

"I'm not a ______ person" is twaddle.

trust your inexperienced gut

in the absence of data, your gut is as good as anything else.

Type's dual life - the words we can see and the perception

Reading is affected by the principles of typography

most information in a typeface is in the top half.

'Good typography is invisible'

People should not have to stumble over our text. Our text should just be very nice, and balanced, not trump that design or lag behind it.

The educational benefit of ugly fonts

Considerations for deisng

There are no rules. Guidelines yes, but no hard and fast rules.

Reduction - like to use as few colours, as few typefaces as possible. otherwise they can get in the way.

embrace the unexpected - colour, imagery not expected to be there

bigger is better
the longer the line the more linespacing
more colour more line height

The Hig

issue of graphical style - it was assumed

design is how it works
style is how it looks

user interfaces are clothing for the mind

fashion desigenres don't creep into your house in hte middle of the night and take all your clothes and replace them with new ones. we do that.
Buttons are a hack.

Edward Tufte - the sin of....

if it looks like a physical object people will try to use it like one. don't fake them out.
stick to one metaphor and love it.

we can learn a lot from game developers

try not to choose wrong metaphor. don't mix metaphors.

voice memo app - looks great, but what's the mike for? do i talk into it? Do I tap to start recording?

do you need buttons at all? why not use the whole screen.

i hate the iPad's back button with the heat of a million suns

the smaller a target, the further away it is, the harder it is to it.

big screens invite big gestures.

buttons are a hack. they add a middle man. touch lets you work with content directly.

design for toddlers. let them show you how to move stuff around.

wants simple weather - need an umbrella or not. doesn't need any more.

be useful to non-geeks

Is this product useful to someone who's never heard of RSS?

you don't need to (and probably shouldn't) rely on another service, Don't depend on fb, google, or whatever for your business. They don't care about you. They don't need to. Bad position to be in: you need them for everything and they need you for nothing.

It's also limiting.

No service is universal.

You can take advantage of services without requiring them.

Be useful to the first user.

"A wonderful nonstick frying pan is useful even if you're the only person who ever buys one" - Bill Gates, The Road Ahead 1995.

Your product should be remarkable - literally, people should want to remark on your product.

Remarkable products don't need to advertise. But your product can help by advertising itself (tastefully).

You should think about revenue from day one.

People will pay money if you make it easy.

You don't need (and won't get) every customer.

You don't need to listen to every feature request.

Listen, say thank you, be guided but not directed.

Everybody wants your product to do one more thing. But it's a different thing for everyone.

pick the few features, most frequently used, byt the majority of users, most appropriate for the context - Apple.

How to build it....

You are going to need a good technological foundation. There will never be a good time to start over.

Use technology conservatively. Use your time well.

There's always something new. New things are buggy. Boring = stable.

Don't be the biggest deployment of anything. Let Google, Yahoo, etc fix the issues.

You don't need "cloud" hosting.

Scale is very complicated. It's never easy,

Linux, on dedicated hardware, Apache, MySQL...Memcache, HAproxy.

These things work.

be orthogonal where possible. design things at right angles.

NSFW Not safe for work.

Rails - core team

The debate is over. We've won.

The message of the rails revolustion is:

It's okay to optimise for programmer happiness and beautiful code, for developers to feel proud of their work and finish projects a little less over time and over budget.

32% of IT projects were considered unsuccessful.

Planet Webstock

1. have small teams

The 15-person team working on the new system was the largest engineering team FB has ever had for a single product or feature. (FB's social email thingy)

2. hire top talent
take recruitment seriously

altassian - end relationship with recruitment firms if candidates sent aren't hired.

Google would rather leave a job unfilled than hire someone sub-optimal for the postiion.

3. best technology

4. most suitable technology
decisions not being made by people 15 step removed. not cios sold on big kit at trade fairs, but engineers making decisions

5. iterations

ship something small, something simple, then make it better.

take a project, pick best guys for the team, let them choose their tools and technology.

need to defend them. you will face objections. 'you're not following process, got to get signed off by DBA etc'.

find a way to make it fun or find a way to do something else

Frank gives students stills of llne and the dot cartoon and asks them to make sense of it. They do it by creating stories. well, the line looks like it's leaning towards the dot but something's getting in the way.
